There is great power in animal therapy, and Caleb Howard's remarkable recovery story is proof of that. Caleb's life was nearly stolen from him when he was 6-years-old. A head-on auto collision left this sweet little boy with broken bones and a traumatic brain injury, causing him to appear almost lifeless in the weeks that followed. His father, Ben Howard, tried to remain hopeful, but he couldn't help but wonder if his son's quality of life would ever return.

"A lot of the progress was so minute to the visual eye that I had become fairly discouraged," Howard admitted.

Caleb's rehabilitation team recognized that his situation called for something special. He needed something to motivate him—a reason to fight through the struggle that accompanied simple movements. With this in mind, they introduced him to Colonel the golden retriever. Just as they'd hoped, Caleb's demeanor changed almost immediately! The dog's presence alone heightened Caleb's awareness and a desire to interact with his new canine companion improved his movements as well.

"One of the things that is amazing about animal therapy is we're in a hospital environment where nothing is normal. When the animal comes in, we're not in a hospital environment anymore; we're in a play environment," Howard said, warmly. "The child forgets about therapy and is focused on play."
